General Information About Bozcaada

Geographical Location and Transportation

Bozcaada is a small and charming island located in the northern Aegean Sea, right at the entrance of the Dardanelles Strait. Its area is approximately 37–40 km², making it Turkey’s third-largest island, and it is only 6 km away from the mainland.

Administratively, Bozcaada is a district of Çanakkale Province. Apart from the town center, there are no village settlements—making it the only district in Turkey without a village. The island is accessible only by sea transport.

Ferries operate year-round from Geyikli Pier in Çanakkale. The trip takes about 30 minutes. During summer, departures are almost hourly, while in winter there are 2–3 trips per day. Since ferries carry vehicles, visitors can reach the island with their own cars.

During the summer season, sea bus services from Çanakkale city center also provide transportation. Especially in July–August, when ferry queues can be long, it is recommended to use the Gestaş online reservation system.

Public transportation on the island is limited. Thanks to its small size and relatively flat terrain, the island can be easily explored by private car, bicycle, or scooter. Even without a vehicle, the town center is entirely within walking distance.

Brief History

Bozcaada has attracted many civilizations throughout history due to its strategic location. In ancient times, the island was known as Tenedos and is mentioned in Homer’s Illiad in the context of the Trojan War.

Persians, the Delian League of Athens, Alexander the Great, the Kingdom of Pergamon, the Roman and Byzantine Empires all ruled the island. In the Middle Ages, Genoese and Venetians fought to seize it.

The Ottomans, during the reign of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror in the mid-15th century, conquered the island and began using the name Bozcaada. During the Ottoman period, the island retained its importance as a peaceful port and vineyard center.

After a brief occupation following World War I, the island was handed over to the Republic of Turkey with the Treaty of Lausanne on July 24, 1923. The interwoven Greek and Turkish cultural heritage of the island has survived to the present day.

In 2017, Bozcaada was included in The New York Times list of “52 Places to See in the World,” highlighting its international recognition.

Island Life and Atmosphere

The population of Bozcaada is around 3,000 people. During the summer, this number exceeds 10,000. The island is quiet and serene in winter, but comes alive with a vibrant atmosphere in summer.

The neighborhood culture is strong; fishermen, vineyard producers, and local markets are part of daily life. A safe, peaceful, and friendly environment prevails.

Historically, the island is divided into Turkish and Greek quarters. In the Greek Quarter, there are bay-windowed stone houses, while the Turkish Quarter features structures from the Ottoman period. The coexistence of church bells and the call to prayer beautifully reflects the island’s multicultural heritage.

Viticulture and fishing are the foundations of the island’s culture. Wines produced from grape varieties such as Çavuş, Vasilaki, and Karalahna have been a legacy of these lands for centuries. The Harvest Festival and Local Flavors Festival showcase the island’s cultural vitality.

Climate and Seasons

Bozcaada has a Mediterranean climate. Summers are warm but not stifling due to the wind; winters are mild and rainy. The island is windy most of the year, and humidity is low.

The direction of the wind even determines which bay is suitable for swimming. This natural climate also enhances vineyard productivity. In spring, the island is covered with poppy flowers, while in autumn it slows down with the grape harvest.

Each season has its own beauty: enjoying the sea in summer, nature walks in spring, harvest and festivals in autumn, and peaceful tranquility in winter.

Bozcaada offers visitors not just a holiday but a true island experience with its peaceful atmosphere, rich history, natural beauty, and slow-paced lifestyle. Here, time does not rush, and memories last long.
